작가노트 | 심상표현주의

나는 현실을 벗어나기 위해 그림을 그리지 않는다.
나는 현실을 통과하며 그린다.

나의 작업은 내가 ‘심상표현주의(Imaginative Expressionism)’라 정의한 개념에 기반한다. 전통적인 표현주의와 달리, 나는 감정을 전달하기 위해 형태를 의도적으로 왜곡하지 않는다. 현실의 구조를 유지한 채, 기억과 감정, 꿈과 같은 내면의 이미지가 그 안에서 조용히 떠오르도록 한다. 현실은 그대로 존재하지만, 그 내부는 변화한다.

내 그림 속 세계는 환상의 파편이 아니다. 인물, 동물, 도시, 자연, 상징적 존재들은 삶의 경험과 반복되는 꿈에 의해 형성된 내적 질서에 따라 공존한다. 이는 무작위가 아니라 시간 속에서 축적된 일관된 시각적 논리다. 각각의 그림은 고립된 장면이 아니라, 하나의 연속된 내면 풍경의 일부다.

내 작업에서 감정은 과장이나 변형에 의존하지 않는다. 대신 밀도, 침묵, 빛과 어둠 사이의 긴장을 통해 전달된다. 밤의 장면, 깊은 청색과 검정, 그리고 미묘한 빛의 변화는 핵심적인 요소다. 터너의 야경이 지닌 분위기적 힘에 영향을 받아, 나는 명확한 묘사보다 기억과 인식이 흐려지기 시작하는 순간에 주목한다.

새, 나비, 달, 꽃, 동물, 여성, 아이, 도시와 같은 반복되는 상징들은 고정된 서사를 강요하지 않는다. 이들은 관람자가 자신의 기억과 감정을 투사할 수 있도록 열려 있는 구조로 기능한다. 이러한 이미지들은 나의 개인적 경험에서 출발했지만, 의도적으로 보편성을 유지한다. 나는 관람자가 그림을 이해하기보다, 그 안에서 자신의 무언가를 마주하길 바란다.

나는 나의 예술 활동 전 기간 동안 단 한 점의 작품도 판매하지 않았다. 이 선택은 시장에 대한 거부가 아니라, 작업 자체의 온전함에 대한 약속이다. 나는 예술이 즉각적인 생존을 위해 타협되어서는 안 된다고 믿었던 빈센트 반 고흐의 예술정신을 깊이 존중한다. 나는 작품의 가치를 단기적 필요와 교환하지 않는다. 나에게 회화는 상품이 아니라, 시간에 대한 책임이다.

심상표현주의는 특정 양식이나 매체에 속하지 않는다. 이는 반대를 통해 규정되는 운동이 아니라, 현실에 뿌리를 둔 채 형식적 제약으로부터 자유로운 내면 비전의 미학이다. 나는 현실과 꿈이 겹치는 경계에서 계속 그림을 그리며, 하나의 질문을 던진다. 현실은 어디까지이며, 꿈은 어디에서 시작되는가.

나의 그림은 답을 제시하지 않는다.
그것들은 시간 속에 머무는 질문으로 남아 있다.

Artist Statement | Imaginative Expressionism

I do not paint to escape reality.
I paint by passing through it.

My work is grounded in a concept I define as Imaginative Expressionism. Unlike traditional expressionism, I do not deliberately distort form to convey emotion. I retain the structure of reality and allow inner images—memories, emotions, and dreams—to surface within it. Reality remains intact, but its interior is quietly transformed.

The worlds within my paintings are not fragments of fantasy. Figures, animals, cities, nature, and symbolic beings coexist according to an internal order shaped by lived experience and recurring dreams. This is not randomness, but a consistent visual logic built over time. Each painting is not an isolated scene, but part of a continuous inner landscape.

Emotion in my work does not rely on exaggeration or deformation. Instead, it is carried through density, silence, and the tension between light and darkness. Night scenes, deep blues, blacks, and subtle shifts of light play a central role. Influenced by the atmospheric power of Turner’s nocturnes, I focus less on clear depiction and more on the moment when memory and perception begin to blur.

Recurring symbols—birds, butterflies, the moon, flowers, animals, women, children, and cities—do not impose a fixed narrative. They function as open structures, allowing viewers to project their own memories and emotions. While these images originate from my personal experience, they are intentionally left universal. I want the viewer not to understand the painting, but to encounter something of their own within it.

Throughout my entire artistic life, I have not sold a single artwork. This decision is not a rejection of the market, but a commitment to the integrity of the work itself. I deeply respect the artistic spirit of Vincent van Gogh, who believed that art should endure in history rather than be compromised for immediate survival. I do not exchange the value of my work for short-term necessity. For me, painting is not a commodity, but a responsibility to time.

Imaginative Expressionism does not belong to a single style or medium. It is not a movement defined by opposition, but an aesthetic of unrestricted inner vision—freedom from formal constraint while remaining rooted in reality. I continue to paint at the boundary where reality and dream overlap, asking a persistent question: where does reality truly end, and where does the dream begin?

My paintings do not offer answers.
They remain as questions, suspended in time.
